Chapter Seven

Dusk had fallen over Rosewood as the man who had strangled Gwen Gardiner stood in front of her apartment complex and watched the crime scene investigators scurrying around like frightened rats on a sinking ship.

A cold drizzle had started to fall late in the afternoon, and it looked as if it would continue well into the night, but the warm glow of satisfaction eased any discomfort caused by the wet, icy weather as the man observed the stunned expression on Detective Nessa Ainsley’s tired face.

She doesn’t know what’s happening. Hasn’t got a fucking clue, has she?

His whole plan had come together so quickly he hadn’t been sure it would even work.

But then the girl had opened the door without hesitation, her questioning eyes showing no sign of suspicion even though she must have known there was a killer on the loose.

Of course, he wasn’t the Rosewood Prowler she’d been hearing about, so perhaps he couldn’t blame her for her naivety.

She didn’t even flinch when I hit her. Never saw it coming.

Thinking of the sickening crunch he’d heard when his fist had connected with the soft skin and fragile bones of her face, he couldn’t suppress a slight grimace.

She did put up a fight once she realized what was happening. Not exactly the delicate little flower she appeared to be, after all.

The man hadn't expected her to be so strong, or so determined. And if he was honest with himself, he hadn’t expected it to take so long to wring the life out of her.

Luckily, the scarf had been within easy reach.

Gazing down at his hands, he felt an electric thrill of pleasure shoot through him, coursing through his veins, making the hair at the nape of his neck stand on end.

These hands have the power to take a life. The power over life itself.

Sure, it had been hard for him to kill the girl. After all, it had been his first time, although now that he’d crossed that line, he doubted it would be the last.

And at one point, when she’d looked up at him with pleading, hopeful eyes, he’d almost felt pity for her.

But then she’d been stupid enough to remind him that if he did let her live, she’d be able to identify him. He could still hear her desperate words in his ear.

“I won’t tell anyone…. please, just let me go…”

Hearing the lie in her voice, he’d known he had no choice.

Besides, she’d been a nobody to him. The type of pretty, prissy, know-it-all girl who had likely always been the teacher’s pet in school or the boss’ favorite at work.

Just another person to act like he wasn’t good enough even though he was obviously smarter than her.

Hadn’t he proven that when she’d let him into her apartment?

Observing the hectic scene outside Rosewood Studio Apartments, the man felt another surge of satisfaction.

And now I can prove that I’m smarter than them all.

His plan was working smoothly so far.
